Christmas Dinner 2021

On Wednesday night the band held a Christmas pot luck dinner to mark the end of a successful year and to recognize the outstanding contribution of three of our members.

Brass Band Association of New Zealand Secretary and President of the Canterbury Provincial Brass Band Association, Helen Lee, was on hand to present a 75 years Long Service award to Errol Miller and a 55 years award to Allan Lilley

For Errol, brass bands were a family interest. His father and two uncles were all keen bandsmen. When his father returned from the war in 1946 young Errol was taken with his Dad to join the Ashburton Silver Band where he began playing cornet. He showed a lot of promise and was soon playing soprano in the main band. Later he moved onto tenor horn, an instrument he is still playing more than 60 years later.

In 1968 Errol and wife Margaret moved to New Brighton. A caroling band was playing nearby and Errol happened to mention he was a horn player. Geoff Butler was not slow in snapping him up and the rest is history.

Errol is a fine musician and up until recently, to fill in, would often play the soprano part on horn.

Errol is our Band Patron, a Trustee and a Life Member. He is very active in all aspects of our band both as a player and a committee member. Errol’s wife Margaret, also a stalwart of the band, has served as secretary to the Supporters Club since its inception 40 years ago. Together, Errol and Margaret provide commitment and a wealth of knowledge to the band which is greatly valued

Alan started as a young boy on a tenor horn and 55 years later he is still a key member of the horn section. Alan comes from a band family, his two sisters joined the band drum corps and his brother played euphonium. But that’s not all. Alan’s eye was taken by a young lass in the band and soon the sound of brass was replaced by wedding bells. Since then his wife Wendy has continued playing in the band. They were extremely proud when their daughter Sharon joined the band and became a very competent trombone player.

Alan is a fine musician, a band Trustee, a Life Member and a man who has all the qualities that, as fellow bandsmen, we hold dear.

We are so fortunate to have such talent and experience in our horn section. Alan and Errol have played together for many years and together can boast 130 years of happy banding.

Band President Brent Andrews also made a presentation to Craig Williamson who is resigning, after 10 years, as musical director.

Craig’s Banding career began when, as a small boy, he joined the Napier Technical Memorial Band learning to play cornet. Over the years Craig played several different instruments before settling on trombone.

He moved to Christchurch to attend University in 2004 and heard the band playing carols at Eastgate Mall in 2009 and joined the New Brighton Silver band playing trombone in 2010.

While out caroling one evening a fellow bandsman asked him how a particular piece of music should be played. Craig’s response so moved him that he suggested Craig should take the vacant role of conductor. Now, after ten years as Musical Director, Craig is moving from the front of the Band to the back row to play a BB bass alongside wife Nadine.

During his time as conductor Craig has taken the Band to three National Contests and all Provincial Contests bar two. He has developed a varied repertoire and kept the band active in a wide range of community playouts. A feature being regular Christmas and ANZAC concerts with the St Albans Choir

Craig has also taken a strong interest in teaching young players and it is heartening that some of those students are a strength of the current band

When asked what the highlights of his years conducting were he replied ‘Everything! I have grown with the job and learnt so much’.

Craig’s commitment to the band has been immense. His love of music is apparent and he has built a band that is in good heart. We have enjoyed his easy style of leadership and excellent communications and welcome him into our ranks as a player

**Thank You **Grant Newby for the write up and Ruth Stamler for the photo.

Riverside Playout

The Band participated in the Riverside Playout organized by the Canterbury Brass Band Association on the riverside opposite the Oxford Terrace hospitality area. The Bands from the Christchurch region all played a selection of traditional Brass Band music to a large and appreciative crowd. Hopefully this will become a permanent fixture in the Brass Band calendar.

Surplus Instruments

As part of other bands using our rooms and needing storage we have done a stock take of our old instruments and found several that are surplus to requirements. These are old instruments and many have been in the band for well over 50 years and are no longer for purpose.

Mr Pablo Ruiz Henao, who is the bass trombone player in the CSO and conducts the Over Fifties Band, approached us re old and surplus instruments which he repairs and sends back to his home country of Columbia in an effort to encourage children from the country side to attend school, and join a learner band. Music making is an amazing encouragement for Colombian young people. As a result our old  and surplus instruments are on there way to Columbia. It is heartwarming that these instruments have given so much pleasure to members  of our band over the years and will continue to develop skills and give pleasure to young people in a far off land.

Three years ago we donated old and surplus instruments to ABI (commercial retailer and repair company) in Auckland who did a similar thing by sending these instruments on to bands in the Pacific Islands.

Over Fifties Band

The Over Fifties Band is now using the Band Rooms as their home base. They practice every Wednesday Morning and we have made space available for storage of their surplus equipment. Another Band has also expressed interest in using the Band Rooms as a practice venue and as such we are upgrading storage areas to accommodate their possible requirements.

Band Room Upgrade

Since the beginning of the year the Committee has continued with upgrading the kitchen and more latterly the Library and passage area. This has involved stripping the shelving and relining the walls and upgrading the electrical systems and painting etc. New shelving and carpet are to be fitted shortly.

The kitchen area is now complete with new dishwasher and oven and has proven to be very functional.

New Life Member

We are delighted to announce that the Band President Mr. Brent Andrews was Awarded Life Membership by Band Patron Mr. Errol Miller.

As well as being a fine musician and lead euphonium player Brent is a very capable administrator and the president of the Band, a position he has held for a number of years. It is his drive and vision that has overseen the upgrade of the service area of the band rooms and his leadership which has enthused and motivated the committee to make it happen.

Covid 19

Covid 19 for the Band, like the rest of the country, has had an impact on our activities with a number of engagements having to be cancelled including an ANZAC Day Parade and an ANZAC  Concert with the St Albans Choir. However Band Members were asked, where possible, play ‘The Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’ at their Gate at 6am. Many of our members played and contributed to a very memorable ANZAC Day morning. Our Band has always played an active part in ANZAC  Day activities and it is heartening to know that tradition was still upheld.

2019 Wrap Up

Band Room Upgrades

This year we have completed the upgrading of the toilet block which also included a major repair of earthquake damaged drains. Currently we are in the process of upgrading the kitchen. The Committee is grateful to the Supporters Club who have funded the repair of the drains and given a substantial donation towards the upgrade of the kitchen. The kitchen has been equipped with a new oven, a dishwasher and a good fridge. Wiring has been upgraded and checked for safety and we have begun installing new LED Lighting. Once vinyl floor covering is in place it will be completed.

Fundraising

Over the past few years we have been fortunate to receive $46 000 from The Rata Foundation and $4000 from the Lion Foundation for our Instrument replacement scheme. To date we have purchased several new quality instruments being, an EEb Bass, 2 Cornets, 2 Tenor Horns, a Baritone, and a set of Timpani drums. Recently we purchased a good quality BBb Bass via Trade Me and a new marching Drum plus accessories. We have also supported two members to purchase their own instruments under our buy back scheme.

We have also had generous support from Pub Charity who provided funding for vinyl in the toilet area, a new security system and a new electric range in the kitchen.

The Four Winds Foundation have supported us with funds for a dishwasher in the new kitchen.

We are very grateful to these Charities for their ongoing support.

In Memoriam

This year the band has played at two services to honour the memory of fellow band members.

Mr Ted King

Ted was a very fine cornet player and was Solo Cornet for the band for number of years.  For some time he also played Solo cornet with the Woolston Brass and later with both Kaiapoi and the Woolston Workingmen’s Club Band. Ted’s family arranged a memorial service at the New Brighton RSA and invited the band, along with bandsmen from other bands, to play a few numbers. Being a Returned Service Man Last Post and Reveille were called.

Sharon (Shazza) Lilley

Sharon passed away unexpectedly after a short illness. She was 29 years old. The Lilley Family have an association with the Band going back many years and Mum, Wendy, and Dad Alan, are active playing members. Wendy said that Sharon was destined to be a member of the band way before she was born, and so it was. She became a talented trombone player and was active in our band and others. Not only was Sharon a talented musician, she achieved the highest standard s in the Girl Guide movement with Duke of Edinburgh  Gold Award , became a qualified Chef and studied and gained her private pilot’s license. Sharon’s family donated her Trombone to the Band which has been suitably inscribed.
