On Wednesday night New Brighton Silver had our 2023/24 AGM.
This year’s AGM saw long-time serving President Brent Andrews opting to stand down from reelection, and pass on the top job to someone else after 14 long and challenging years.
Not long after Brent took on the Presidency role, Christchurch was hit with the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, which resulted in our Band Hall sustaining damage which we were not insured for.
Brent rallied the troops, and his leadership and drive has resulted in the Band Hall being repaired, refurbished and renovated inside and out to a high standard, which the Band is very proud of. The Band Hall was also renamed the Geoff Butler Hall in memory and recognition of Geoff’s commitment to our Band over his lifetime.
In Brent’s time in the top job, he has taken the lead on appointing 3 new Musical Directors and the process that goes with it, and ensuring the Band maintains its’ core role as both a community and contesting Band.
Brent was also the driving force behind our new uniforms, numerous new instruments and updating the Band’s logo, all of our great trips away for Contests or social travel, and some great social gatherings to keep the Band feeling like one big happy family.
Brent also steered the Band through Covid, and also built a relationship with The NZ Army Band’s MAP’s Programme, which the Band has loved being involved with.
And lastly, Brent was one of the drivers behind reestablishing the Band’s Learners Group, which has long been a dream of his.
Brent is still staying with us as the Band’s Treasurer, (a role he has also held for the last 5-plus years), and as our principal Euphonium.
Brent’s leadership has left the Band in great shape and will certainly be a hard act to follow. As the Band moves into another new chapter of our long history, our Jim Hill has taken on the job of President.
Jim is a Band member of long standing, a Trustee of the Band, and past Drum Major. We wish him every success with his appointment to the role.
All of the NBSB family would like to thank Brent, and acknowledge all the time, energy and effort he has put in over the last 14 years. We salute you!
