Geoff Butler – 75 Years in Brass Bands

22/6/2013

Past and present members of the New Brighton Silver Band and Supporters Club gathered together last month to celebrate one of the most significant and memorable events in the recent history of the band. We were joined by the family and friends of our good mate Geoff Butler to formally acknowledge his 75 year involvement with the brass band movement in Canterbury and in particular, his 51 years’ service to the New Brighton Silver Band.

Geoff held the role of conductor from 1962 – 1999. He has been a tutor to 289 pupils and today is still an active playing member on the Eb Bass. During his tenure as conductor Geoff worked tirelessly to maintain the strong bond with the local New Brighton community that the band was originally founded upon. He played a key role in building the substantial facilities that we enjoy today and was ably supported in all his endeavors by his loyal wife Isobel, right up until her recent passing in 2011.

On 22 June 2013 the band executive chose to formally recognize Geoff and Isobel’s enormous contribution and commitment by naming the band room In Rawhiti Domain – ‘Geoff Butler Hall’.
